Summer, So Far

Staying cool in another epic heat wave.

Our first pumpkin.

Joey is hoping that we’ll have enough to sell at the farmer’s market this fall for a dollar each.

His optimism makes me smile.

My sunflowers are exploding this week, which makes me very happy.

Sunflowers are such happy flowers.

But sadly, no rain.

We haven’t had rain since the end of May, I think.

We’ve given up on watering our lawns, concentrating instead on keeping the vegetable and flower gardens alive.

On the road every morning by 7:30, logging between 5 and 7 miles a run.

Weekends I cut my runs shorter since I prefer to be lazy and get a later start.

I’ve been leaving puddles on the kitchen floor on my return home, and it’s been great.

But the best thing about this summer is getting to sit outside after supper in the porch swing.

The family is inside reading, playing computer games, watching baseball.

Outside are cicadas, hummingbirds and lightning bugs.

I think I win.

Happy July 1!

  1. I can’t tell you the last time I’ve seen a lightning bug! However, I can tell you I was MUCH younger the last time it happened. Katie, you never let me down with your photos. I so look forward to seeing them. Thank you!

  2. Beautiful photos as always. :D In Oregon we are experiencing the coldest, wettest year ever. Rain, almost daily with highs mid-60s to 70. Only 6 days that even hit the low 80s. But beginning on July 4, it is predicted to finally dry out and warm up. We’ll see. I wish we could share some of our rain with you. I would rather it be cool and drizzly that blazing hot so I am not unhappy, but the vegetable garden is struggling.

    • Isn’t it ironic that one part of the country can be an oppressive oven, while another can be drowning in rain? Just this morning, they were talking about conserving water as a first step to restrictions state wide.
