Earlier this summer, David and Joey went down to the bike shop that we frequent so much that it’s a little bit like that bar on the old t.v. show, “Cheers”, except instead of the barkeeps and barmaids yelling, “NOORM!”, the bike mechanics and fellow cyclists all yell, “DAAAVE!” when David strolls through the front door.
Maybe not quite the same thing, but I do enjoy the mental scenario that plays through my head whenever we walk into the shop together.
Anyway, it must’ve been June when David and Joey came home with a brand new hybrid Trek road bike for out little big man.
He was smitten, taking it out right away and riding all over our neighborhood, breathlessly telling us on his return that the gears were so much easier to shift! and it was so much smoother to ride! and the seat was so much more comfy than his old bike seat.
Joey even named his new friend, Bart the Bike, and the two are inseparable.

Over the summer, Joey decided that he wanted to ride Bart to school this year.
We found a good bike lock, put on a bike rack so he can strap on his trumpet to take to and from school, and Joey commenced to test biking the route to his school.
We live in a area of town where there are plenty of quiet neighborhood streets that Joey can use every day, and we live only 5 minutes from his middle school, so he isn’t riding in traffic.
Today was the first day of riding to school.
He loved it, coming home this afternoon happy and excited and red faced and full of good news about his school day.
It made me smile.
I think Bart was smiling, too.
